Clearinghouse for Clinical Rotations

Have you already found a clinical placement in Alaska in a rural area? Do you need financial support for travel or lodging?  The Alaska AHECs may be able to help you.  Each Alaska AHEC Center has a limited amount of funding available to help support health professional students participating in rotations in rural Alaska or with underserved populations in urban settings.  Funding is capped at $800/student for rotations longer than 3 weeks and $600/student for rotations 3 weeks or less in length.  Funding is generally limited to transportation to/from rotation site and housing on site during the rotation. Students are eligible for travel funding once per grant year (September 1st through August 31st).  Student applicants participating in an Alaska program or with ties to Alaska will receive priority.(Please see Frequently Asked Questions page for further funding information.)

We support various clinical rotation student types and work with several different programs from a variety of universities.  The most common types of rotations are listed below, but we encourage other types of health professional students to contact us as well:

  4th year medical students
  allied health students
  dental students
  medical residents
  nurse practitioners
  nursing students
  pharmacy interns
  physician assistants

If you have already secured a placement within Alaska and are interested in receiving support for your travel to the community and/or housing, please contact one of the Clinical Rotation Coordinators listed below. (Note: If you are unsure of which AHEC region your community falls within, please contact Janice Troyer in the Alaska AHEC Program office.)

Note:  The travel and lodging funding we have available to support students are all grants based.  Due to this fact, we usually receive budget amounts in August and September for the upcoming fiscal year.  Thus, it is difficult for us to promise financial support for future clinical rotations, depending on the time of year requests are made and the requested rotation dates.  It is particularly difficult when students are looking for placements one or two years in advance, which is often the case for several programs.  With this in mind, please indicate in your initial contact with us whether you would be willing to participate in a rotation if we are able to find you a placement, but are unable to guarantee financial travel support for that rotation.
